How to configure modem for ISP connection
1. Click KnetworkManager in the System Tray.
2. Select Dial-Up Connections > Configure Dial-Up Connections.
3. A warning message appears. Click OK.
4. Click Add button to add new modem device and start configuration.
5. In the Modem Parameters window, enter '/dev/modem' in the Modem
Device field, Click Next button.
6. In the Select Internet Service Provider (ISP) window, select Custom
Providers and click Next button.
7. In the Provider Parameters window, enter Provider Name, Phone
Number User Name. Uncheck "Always Ask for Password" field and
enter the Password. Click Next button.
8. In the Connection Parameters window, check Stupid Mode option.
Click Next button.
9. Click Finish button to save the configuration. When asked to
configure mail, just click No button.
How to make an ISP connection:
1. Click KnetworkManager in the System Tray.
2. Select Dial-Up Connections, and click the modem connection you
want to establish.
How to disconnect ISP connection:
1. Click KnetworkManager in the System Tray.
2. Select Dial-Up Connections, and click the modem connection that
starts with "Hang up".
How to check for ISP logs
1. Go to /var/log/smppd.
2. Open ifcfg-modemX.log.
Sending and receiving fax using Hylafax:

How to install Hylafax:
1. Go to K Menu > System, and select YaST.
2. Enter Administrator(root) password.
3. Click Software Management in the Software category.
4. Select Search in the Filter field.
5. Search and check hylafax, and click Accept.
6. Follow the instructions.
How to configure Hylafax:
1. In a terminal window, use the su (switch user) command to obtain
root privileges.
2. Type /usr/sbin/faxsetup.
3. You will be asked whether to update /var/spool/hylafax/status/any.info.
Enter yes.
4. Supply the items asked. Use the defaults when you are not
sure of the settings.
5. You will be asked to restart the HylaFAX server processes.
Enter yes.
6. You will be asked to run faxaddmodem to configure a modem. Enter yes.
7. Enter modem as serial port.
8. Suppy the items asked. Make sure that the phone number of fax
modem is correct. You can specify a fax modem name as local
identification string. Use the default values when you are not
sure of the settings.
9. You will be asked if the configuration is ok, just answer yes.
10. You will be asked what class the modem be configured. Enter 1.
11. You will be asked if the modem configuration parameters are ok.
Enter yes.
12. You will be asked if the non-default schedule parameters are ok.
Enter yes.
13. You will be asked to run faxaddmodem again. Enter no.
14. You will be asked whether to run faxmodem. Enter yes.
15. Open /etc/inittab, and add this line in the file:
mo:35:respawn:/usr/lib/fax/faxgetty /dev/modem
16. Enter 'init q' to reload the inittab.
17. Lastly, enable the Hylafax on the Runlevel to get the service
started during bootup.
a. Go to YaST.
b. Select 'System' on the left side of the window.
c. Select 'System Services (Runlevel).
d. Select 'hylafax' on the services listed.
e. Click 'Enable' button.
d. Click 'Finish' button.
How to configure KdeprintFax to send fax:
1. Select the K Menu, select Tools, select Printing, then select
KdeprintFax.
2. Click Settings menu, and select Configure KdeprintFax.
3. Select Personal on the left side of the window.
4. Enter Name, Company, and Fax Number.
5. Select System on the left side of the window.
6. Select HylaFax as Fax System.
7. In the Command field, add this option, '%page_s' between '%res'
and '%time_a'
8. Click OK.
How to send fax:
1. Open KdeprintFax application.
2. Add a file to send. Select File menu and select Add File.
3. Browse and select a file to send, and click Open button.
4. Add a fax recipient. Select Fax menu, and select New Fax Recipient.
5. Enter the fax number, name, and enterprise of the recipient. Click
OK button.
6. Send the file. Select Fax menu, and select Send Fax.
How to view a received fax
1. Go to K Menu > Run command.
2. Enter kfax in the command field.
3. In the KFax window, select File > Open.
4. Browse and select the fax you want to view, and click Open button.
How to check for fax logs
1. KdeprintFax creates its own logs. You can see the logs on Fax menu.
View Log, or simply click the View Log icon found in the toolbar.
2. For detailed log files, open /var/spool/fax/log. A log is created
under this folder when sending or receiving is done. You can
check the logs if sending/ receiving is successful or not.
3. For pending documents not yet sent, open /var/spool/fax/sendq

5. Enter the region/country name for modem unit. For example: JAPAN
To check for the current region setting:
1. In a terminal window, type minicom.
2. Enter ati9 to check for the current region setting.
3. Enter Ctrl+A and Z, and enter X to exit minicom.
