Some features of the Rescue and Recovery program might vary, depending on the
version you have; however, major features include the following:
- Full and incremental hard disk recovery using backup files created by the
Rescue and Recovery program. Backup files can be stored on your hard drive,
on recordable CD or DVD media, on a network drive, or on a USB device.
- Recovery of individual files from a Rescue and Recovery backup file.
- Restoration of the hard disk to the same state it was in when the computer
was manufactured [selected NetVista(TM), ThinkCentre(TM), and ThinkPad(R)

Accessing the Rescue and Recovery workspace
===========================================
In the event of a complete hard disk failure, you can open the Rescue
and Recovery workspace by booting from rescue media (either a Rescue
and Recovery CD or a USB hard disk configured as a Rescue and Recovery
device). You can create rescue media from the Windows Vista Start menu.
Accessing the Rescue and Recovery workspace requires different
procedures depending on the type of computer you are using. For
instructions, refer to one of the following:
ThinkCentre and NetVista computers
--------------------------------------
Note: This procedure might not work on some older NetVista computers.
If this procedure does not work, follow the procedure for Other brands
and manufacturers' computers.
1. Turn off your computer.
2. Press and hold F11 or Enter.
3. Turn on your computer.
4. When you hear beeps or see a logo screen, release F11 or Enter.
5. If you set a Rescue and Recovery password, type your password when
prompted. The Rescue and Recovery workspace opens after a short

ThinkPad computers

Note: If your ThinkPad computer does not have a blue Access IBM button
or you cannot enter the Rescue and Recovery workspace using the blue
Access IBM button, follow the procedure for Other brands and

Consideration 1

System Migration Assistant does not launch, as is expected, after a
restore operation.
System Migration Assistant does not launch, as is expected, when a
backup is restored that did not contain a System Migration Assistant
installation. This occurs even after the user has saved all files that
were created or changed since the selected backup was taken.
After you restore your computer using a backup that does not contain
System Migration Assistant, System Migration Assistant does not launch
even if it was installed after the selected backup was created.
If this occurs, do one of the following:
- Reinstall System Migration Assistant.
- Restore from a backup that includes System Migration Assistant.

Consideration 2
---------------
An error message prompts for the BitLocker Recovery key when restarting
the computer after installing Rescue and Recovery
After installing Rescue and Recovery and restarting the computer, an
error message prompts the user to enter the BitLocker Recovery key.
This message is displayed when following criteria are met:
- No Lenovo service partition exists on the computer
- Windows Vista Ultimate or Windows Vista Enterprise is the installed
operating system
- BitLocker is configured
When these criteria are met, then after Rescue and Recovery is installed
and the computer restarts, an error message indicates that settings have
changed and prompts the user for the BitLocker Recovery key. This message
is displayed whenever the computer is restarted. BitLocker is not supported
with Rescue and Recovery in this installation scenario.
To solve this issue, you must either disable BitLocker or uninstall Rescue
and Recovery.
Consideration 3
---------------
Select the Do not persist the password option when restoring a backup
to a new computer.
When restoring a backup to a new computer, both password persistence
options are available for selection and one must be selected before the
Next button activates. However, when restoring a backup to a new computer.
the local hard disk drive should be empty and Rescue and Recovery should
not ask for password persistency.
When prompted, select the Do not persist password option and click Next.
Note: Either option should work as if no password persistence is selected,
since there is no password to persist in the hard drive.

The following are considerations associated with the Rescue and
Recovery environment:
Consideration 1
---------------
No wireless or dial-up capability exists from the Rescue and
Recovery workspace. Only wired Ethernet is supported.
Consideration 2
---------------
All pointing devices will operate as a two-button device within the
Rescue and Recovery workspace. For example, just as the third
button of a three-button mouse is not supported in the Rescue and
Recovery workspace, the scrolling capability of an ScrollPoint(TM)
mouse is not supported.
Consideration 3
---------------
Depending on the video adapter installed on your computer, there might be
a series of flashes when the Rescue and Recovery workspace is
opened.
Consideration 4
---------------
The browser used in the Rescue and Recovery workspace has been
modified to provide enhanced security. As a result, some browser
functions have been deleted.
Consideration 5
---------------
If you are booting from the Rescue and Recovery CD, the
CD must remain in the drive in order to perform rescue and recovery
operations.
Consideration 6
---------------
The Rescue and Recovery program only supports Norton AntiVirus 2004
(or higher). If you have a computer with Norton AntiVirus 2002 or
2003, then you are eligible for a free upgrade that can be obtained

Consideration 7
---------------
Rapid Restore Ultra 3.0 and prior versions are not compatible with
the Rescue and Recovery program. If you install the Rescue and
Recovery program and previous versions of Rapid Restore Ultra are
installed, then the Rescue and Recovery program prompts you to
uninstall any previous versions of Rapid Restore Ultra including all
backups made by prior versions of the program during installation of
the Rescue and Recovery program.
Consideration 8
---------------
The video RAM that came with your computer might have a default
capacity that is less than 8MB. Having a video RAM lower than 8MB
might adversely affect performance of the Rescue and Recovery
program. For computers using shared memory, the video RAM must be
set between 4MB and 8MB. Video RAM is changed by entering BIOS on
your computer.
Consideration 9
----------------
You can use a USB memory key to rescue files within
the Rescue and Recovery workspace. However, you cannot boot from a
USB memory key.
Consideration 10
----------------
The Rescue and Recovery workspace does not support booting from a
DVD-RAM disc. As a result, do not create rescue media, Product
Recovery CDs, backups, or archive backups where the first disc of the
set is DVD-RAM media. Other DVD formats are supported.
Consideration 11
----------------
computers that have a hidden protected area (HPA), also referred
to as PARTIES, and have the Rescue and Recovery program installed
will not be able to boot into either the PARTIES or Rescue and
Recovery workspace after recovering the original factory contents.
To enable the PARTIES area again, restore a backup using either the
Rescue and Recovery program in the Windows environment or by booting
from rescue media and then uninstall the Rescue and Recovery program.
Consideration 12
----------------
Close all applications before attempting to restore from the
Rescue and Recovery workspace. Failing to close applications might
lead to performance problems.
Consideration 13
----------------
When restoring the operating system and application from a Rescue
and Recovery backup, you might need to reinstall applications that
have been added since the creation of the selected backup.
Consideration 14
----------------
To restore original factory contents on computers that have the Rescue
and Recovery 1.0 program installed, reinstall the Rescue and Recovery
program after restoring the original factory contents. After reinstalling
the Rescue and Recovery 2.0 program perform a backup operation . It is a
good idea to dispose of old rescue media and to create new rescue media
after the Rescue and Recovery 2.0 program is reinstalled.
Consideration 15
----------------
For security purposes, it is a good idea not to backup to a shared
network drive from a computer that is logged on with administrative
privileges. However, if a computer with administrative privileges
does backup to a shared network drive, the computer will no longer
have read/write access to the drive. In order to delete any backups
from the shared network drive you will need to either provide write
access to the computer after performing the backup operation or log
in as another user without administrative privileges.
Consideration 16
----------------
Booting from a diskette typically takes more time than booting from
other types of media. After you boot from the Recovery Repair Diskette,
a menu selection is displayed before all of the information on the diskette
is loaded. Wait for all diskette activity to end before making any menu
selections. Ensure that the diskette LED light is not on to determine that
all diskette activity has ended. Making selections while the Recovery
Repair Diskette is still loading might result in making unintended menu
selections.
Consideration 17
----------------
When attempting to make a USB hard disk drive bootable with Rescue and
Recovery an error message might display indicating it failed to copy a log
file. The application will try and copy the file up to five times and
display the error message if it is unable to do so. This is an intermittent
problem.
Consideration 18
----------------
A message prompting users to clean up the service partition might be displayed
when the Rescue and Recovery program is installed. This is an informational
message only.
Consideration 19
----------------
When attempting to back up to an available USB hard disk drive, a user might
receive the following error: ?The backup to USB failed because the USB drive
could not be found.? If this occurs, remove the USB hard disk drive, and then
re-attach it. The USB hard disk drive will become E: drive, thus solving the
problem.
Consideration 20
----------------
Files on excluded partitions cannot be saved to an external device when running
a full restore from the Rescue and Recovery workspace. To avoid this problem,
do not exclude partitions containing important data that you may want to recover
later. To recover from this problem, boot to Windows and copy the necessary
files to an external device before initiating the restore operation.
Consideration 21
----------------
If a user boots to the Rescue and Recovery workspace (PDA) and then reboots to
Windows and uninstalls the Ultimaco Safeguard Easy program, the computer upon
next reboot will only boot to the Rescue and Recover workspace. This condition
persists upon subsequent reboots.
To avoid this problem, complete the following procedure:
Cold boot the computer to Windows before uninstalling the Ultimaco Safeguard
Easy program.
To recover from a broken state, complete one of the following procedures:
? Download and run a recovery repair diskette from the Lenovo Web site.
This will set the first partition on the drive as active so that the computer
can boot to it.
? Use a partitioning tool, such as Partition Magic, to set the first partition
on the drive as active so that the computer can boot to it.
Consideration 22
----------------
For a limited user, the list of files does not display when attempting
to restore individual files from a network backup in the Windows environment.
To resolve this issue, use the Restore Individual Files option in the
Rescue and Recovery workspace. In the Rescue and Recovery workspace, a
limited user can view the list of files when attempting to restore
individual files from a network backup.
Consideration 23
----------------
When booting to the Rescue and Recovery workspace from a PXE server, such as
Windows 2003 Server Remote Installation Service, the operating system will
load and then hang indefinitely. A device driver gets loaded while booting
to the Rescue and Recovery workspace that conflicts with loading the operating
system from the network. This might cause a blue screen.
To eliminate the hand during PXE boot, delete the following files from the PXE
image:
prebootswwork twktpfd.tbi
prebootswwork twktpfe.tbi
Consideration 24
----------------
When attempting to deploy a manifest file from a floppy drive while running the
Custom Factory Recovery program in administrator mode, the Open File interface
might not display the contents of the floppy drive because the Rescue and
Recovery
workspace has limited floppy drive support. Many floppy drives might function
properly, but only select IBM and Sony drives are officially supported.
Use a supported device to deploy the manifest file when running the Custom
Factory Recovery program.
Consideration 25
----------------
When creating a backup to a second hard drive contained in a SATA UltraBay
adapter using Rescue and Recovery, there is an option to also make that drive
bootable. This drive will not boot even though the process to make the drive
bootable completes without error. Instead the drive boots to a blinking cursor.
Rescue and Recovery does not currently support making a second hard drive
contained in a SATA UltraBay adapter bootable while creating a backup on it.
To recover from this error, do one of the following:
- Create a different rescue medium: CD/DVD, USB hard drive, or non-SATA 2nd
hard drive (such as PATA or IDE).
- Run the Microsoft diskpart utility to ?clean? the drive first. Make the
second hard drive contained in a SATA UltraBay adapter bootable using the
Create Recovery Media application. Then take a backup to it.
Consideration 26
----------------
After deleting the base backup, merge failures might begin to occur.
To recreate this problem, complete the following procedure:
1. Create a base backup to a USB drive.
2. Create a few incremental backups to both USB and local hard drive.
3. Choose to delete the base backup using the Windows interface.
This operation fails while levels 0 and 1 are being merged.
If this occurs, delete all backups and create a new base backup.
Consideration 27
----------------
When booting to a bootable USB hard drive made using the Rescue and Recovery
program on a Dell 380 computer, the computer fails to boot. Instead, the
boot process results in a system blue-screen. The Dell 380 computer uses a
down-level hardware revision of the IASTOR SATA controller. A patch is
necessary to get the Rescue and Recovery workspace to boot from a hard drive,
CD, or DVD. However, this patch does not enable booting from a USB hard drive
on this Dell computer.
To avoid this problem, create a bootable CD or DVD using the ThinkVantage Create
Recovery Media application. Use the bootable CD or DVD as the rescue medium
instead of a USB hard drive.
Consideration 28
----------------
Backup files stored on an external device are not displayed in the View all
backups interface after re-installing the Rescue and Recovery program. This
occurs after saving backup files on an external device, and then uninstalling
and re-installing the Rescue and Recovery 4.0 program. After re-installing the
program, the backups on the external device are no longer visible in the View all
backups interface. The backup files on the external device are still intact, and
you can restore from these backups. When you follow the restore path, the desired
backup files are displayed even though the files were not displayed in the View
all backups interface.
Consideration 29
----------------
Installing the Rescue and Recovery 4.0 program on a system deployed with an
ImageUltra 3.0 service partition breaks the ImageUltra recovery process. The
ImageUltra link on the predesktop menu in the service partition is missing after
the Rescue and Recovery 4.0 program is installed. Thus, a user can not start the
ImageUltra recovery process. Installing this program also disables the Restore
Factory Contents feature, which fails with an error.
To reproduce this problem, complete the following procedure:
1. Deploy a system with ImageUltra 3.0 that leaves a service partition on the
computer.
2. After the system has completed the ImageUltra installation, install the Rescue
and Recovery 4.0 program.
3. After Rescue and Recovery 4.0 installation is complete, reboot into the service
partition by pressing F11 during startup.
The ImageUltra link is missing from the predesktop menu and attempting to go
through the Restore Factory Contents process results in an error.
To resolve this issue after installing the Rescue and Recovery 4.0 program,
create the following TAG file in the Service Partition:

Rescue and Recovery configuration for limited users On select languages, when a
limited user launches the Rescue and Recovery program and changes settings under
Set schedule and preferences, the changes are not saved when OK or Apply is clicked.
This problem occurs on select languages because the Users group name is translated
and therefore cannot be found. This prevents the Users group from obtaining the
correct permissions to change these settings.
An Administrative user can change the permissions on the key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWARELenovoRescue and RecoverySettings to give the
Users group (or translated equivalent group) Set Value and Create Subkey access.
Consideration 31
----------------
The Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributive Package is required for Rescue and Recovery
installation on computers running the Windows Vista 64-bit operating system.
Otherwise, Rescue and Recovery installation will terminate with an
error message stating that the "Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributive Package for 64"
is not installed on the system.
